i can’t remember EXACTLY where i met frannie, as i lovingly call her…it was vancouver. probably through a vancouver wedding photographer group meetup or gathering of some sort. I had the pleasure of second shooting for her on several occasions. and i LOVED it. not only is she super talented at what she does, she is an absolute BLAST to be around! always having fun, always laughing, always loving life. she has recently just won a fearless photographer award. she was a finalist in for Best Overall Wedding Photographer at the BC wedding awards last year. and was recently in bride & groom magazine as one of canada’s top 5 photojournalists. she is amazing. i think i said that. :)
thank you dear frannie for taking the time to chat…and for sharing a bit of who you are. you are a gem. and i love you so. and i’m so proud of your recent accomplishments!!
meet frannie. wife. mom. superhero photographer. :)
TLH: what is the favorite part of what you do (business/organization wise)?
Fran: Meeting all kinds of different personalities. Being a part of their special day is such a huge honor and one that i don’t take lightly. I love pushing myself with each and every wedding capturing their memories, laughter, tears … their story… it is such a privilege knowing that their families will be enjoying those images for years to come.
TLH: how did you get started? everyone asks, i know, but peeps wanna know!
Fran: My parents always had me in art classes. when i was 13 i got a job as a photographer’s assistant and fell in love with sketching with light. I stopped shooting for about 10 yrs and while living in New York City I decided to go back to school to learn digital and all the technology that goes along with it. When I finished school we moved to vancouver, bc and I decided to open up my own studio. I haven’t looked back … i’m enjoying every minute of it.
TLH: if you could live anywhere in the world for a year, money not an issue, where would it be and why?
Fran: I would live in Italy. Probably Cinque Terre or Tuscany area. I am half italian and had the opportunity to backpack across italy for 3 weeks in 2001 … i fell in love with the country … people … food … wine … everything!! plus it helps that i know a bit of the language.
TLH: favorite story/memory of past client/work/project
Fran: There is an image of a bride’s parents having a beautiful moment together during the ceremony. I recently found out that a few months after the wedding the mother passed away and that I captured their relationship perfectly in that one image. It meant so much to the bride & her dad that it still brings tears to my eyes. Photographers need to remember that it is important to document the bride & groom’s wedding but you still need to look around and focus on some of the key people in their lives as well … the whole family is a part of this beautiful celebration. Like the photo of a bride’s 92 year old grandfather blowing bubbles while she walked down the aisle … I love it!! It’s all the moments put together that make a great story.
TLH: what is your favorite foods to eat? to make? to buy? why?
Fran: My favorite food is mashed potatoes … i love to eat it with salmon … steak … salad … you name it!! I make them every way you can imagine :) why?? lol!! hmmm i don’t know … my husband can’t believe out of all the yummy foods out there for 14 yrs i keep telling him mashed potatoes too when he asks me that question … his favorite is lobster … lol!
TLH: where do you see yourself in your biz and life in 5 years?
Fran: So much can happen in 5 years … business: i take workshops and seminars yearly to push me to think outside the box and to keep it exciting … in doing so i hope that i continue to grow as a wedding photographer. Life: to continue loving my son & husband … and being the best mother & wife that i can be for them. Now that the boy is getting older I see myself at the hockey arena quite a bit :) he is always staring at his globe and asking questions about different parts of the world … i am hoping that we will be able to explore some of these countries that he is curious about :)
TLH: how do you want to be remembered?
Fran: i would like to be remembered for my sense of humor and for my abilitity to build relationships with people that i meet. I would like people to remember that I am a very loving mother … wife … friend … sister … daughter … photographer … and i try to make everyone feel comfortable and special in my presence :)
